Waiting on Virginia

This is what it’s all been leading up to

The grand finale is seeing you

Everyone’s asking

Me and your father have been tasking

Fixing things, preparing freezer meals, last minute laundry

I hope, Dear, one day you’ll understand how it feels

I know it hasn’t quite donned on me

Not yet in full measure

But seeing you in black and white, and watching you move, you are a treasure

Today was the expected date

But it turns out a little longer I’ll have to wait

I’m not sure what you’re doing in there

But I told your grandma not to rush you

You could be drinking coffee, that’s fair

Or maybe you’re using the bathroom – that’s what your father would do

But just FYI, Love, if you’re not here by next Sunday, they’ll evict you

For now I sit on the couch and from above watch you move

You’re a delight

More than alright

I can’t wait to hold you for the first time

I’ll keep you close forever but I know you’re God’s, not mine

(And believing I own anything is unwise)

But I’ll do my best to shepherd you

To see you through

You’ll learn soon enough that your parents are fallible

Know that I’m calling on Him for help while you’re so malleable

I’ll give you my utmost

When you’re ready, I’ll take you to the zoo and the coast

I’ll keep waiting, won’t rush you

I’ll just have a seat right here

Reminds me of that Brad Paisely song, “Waitin on a Woman”

And when you’re ready, I’ll hold you near
