Rapunzel’s Retreat

It’s a lovely little reminder

A simple gesture that showed they’d come find her

If she were lost, abducted, stranded

Ankle sprained, flat tire, maimed

But now she knows never abandoned

Sometimes her gremlins speak

They say no one would ever miss her, so that’s what she often thinks

But today she sat in the back room rocker, in a different than usual spot

And what happened shocked her

After a little while, she heard her Golden retriever’s paws tapping on the hardwood

He padded down the hallway to make sure all was good

He peered into the usual spot: the den

But no one was there, nothing happened

His ears were raised, his senses heightened

Where was his beloved, could he find?

A simple head turn showed for what he yearned: her

Just in the back room, unusual

She welcomed him in there, from her rocking chair

And the pup wagged his tail

He found her, he hadn’t failed

And then a few minutes later her husband came inside

Down the hall to talk to her, where she normally abides

He turned his head, hoping to find her

There was an empty chair in the den instead

He turned to his right

And was pleased by the sight: she was right there in the back room, resting, feet up, with a happy Golden retriever, well-groomed

And her belly was rounded

Her feet up, fears wordlessly expounded

She wasn’t lost in a forest or on the side of the highway

Just retreated to a back room after a tough day

They came for her

Every woman’s dream fulfilled

She was worth the risk of the unknown, of the search, of capture

They searched the rooms and hallways

And for that, she felt loved, valued, worth it

And she loved her husband and Golden retriever (and unborn baby) always

And found strength to live another day
