We were in the OB-GYN’s office
Waiting
I sat there while my husband was pacing
Strangely enough, I was thinking about sausage
Our lives had been the typical whirlwind
He stopped, looked at me, and said, “It’s good to see you, and you know, you’re still my best friend”
There were no screens to look at
Nowhere else to be
So I smiled back, told him the same
The doc came in and said, “Yep, you’re husband’s to blame”
“The little one will be here in October”
My husband moved a little bit closer
The doctor told us some things
And told me to not forget to eat
She quickly drifted out
Me and my husband suddenly realized maybe what life is about
I stood to go
He said, “We shouldn’t waste this secluded little space, you know”
I turned, approached him, gave him a slow kiss
He put his callused hands on my hips
Once again like we were kids
But this time in our late 30s
I whispered, “We better hurry”
I felt a bit tingly
He was warm
My stomach rumbled like a thunderstorm
He said, “Let me take you to Denny’s like old times”
He must have known that eggs and French toast and sausage were on my mind
He said, “We’ll finish this at home”
He was handsome as ever – among all the sterile vials and medical lighting
He said I could wear my old nurse outfit
I didn’t doubt it
The receptionist told us to come back in two weeks
My husband told her, “It’s a date for us, I think”
My stomach rumbled and fluttered as we left
Just a moment in that doctor’s office – of all places – stole both our hearts like a theft
My husband gently touched my abdomen
I saw the ultrasound pictures and was laughing
We got breakfast at Denny’s
I thought I’m so glad this man gets me
We went home
The day was like one of our old dates
But after 13 years of marriage, so much sweeter, great
Maybe we just needed the doctor’s office to give us a good shake
And we’ll meet our little one soon
We can’t wait
