Watching my Stomach

My new pastime is watching my stomach

It’s better than watching anything on Netflix

In fact, that’s another subscription we cancelled

So when I sit on the couch I watch my pouch

It’s got more activity than ever

And looks like a little mound

There’s jabs, there’s twitches, there’s flutters

And on the margins (?gutters?) you can see elbows

There’s all kinds of bulges that come and go

And more interactive than TV, if you feel, there’s bones!

This spectacle even keeps me up at night

When I lie on my side

There’s one to keep me company

All the time she abides

I consider how it’s quite something

I think of not hall of famers but all the mamas that came before

The countless hers that never got glamour

I think to carry a life is harder than carrying a football

As we sit just outside fall

She inches closer to the size of a pumpkin

I’m drawing up my game plan

I admit I’ve got a little bit of anxiety

I’m gonna put it down so I can pick up some gumption

I’m moving on to motherhood

The bumper sticker said there’s no other hood like it

Yeah, I’m excited

Watching, nourishing, reading the pouch

Till she comes out

Believing I’ve got this despite what the cost is

The Creator is on our side

Within us both, the great Storyteller abides

As the crepe myrtles will soon shiver

I once again feel my stomach quiver

I look forward to crisp fall

Not because of football

But because of new life in my stomach (uterus)

More miraculous than anything on the screen

Or even my restless mind that gleans

Oh, another kick! Pre-autumn bliss!
