The Life in Me

She likes to do yoga at 2 am

And to swim laps in my lower abdomen

In the pictures she likes to make fists

I wonder what it is she’s training to resist

Will she be a swimmer or a runner

Maybe that’s just it

She probably loathes the labels

I understand completely

Of anything and everything, she is able

I make sure I eat so that she does

She can take most the nutrients

I pray she’s prudent

She’ll be here after me

This whole existence is a mystery

How do two make one

Just between us (me and her father) we hope she likes to run

Or maybe she’ll be into martial arts

With those elbows and shins

Finding their way to the edges of my abdomen

But in the ultrasound pictures she’s got runner’s quads

This life, this wonder, this child in me – whoever she is –

Is surely a gift from God

And I won’t put a label on her

Nah, just for the next two months I’ll ponder

And pray

That she’ll be who her Creator is sewing her together to be
