Daughter of Genesis

Beneath the surface she moves

Like a sea creature

I can see the ripples, the grooves

On the sea of my lower abdomen

Oh, how at nearly 29 weeks I’m a believer

It’s still a miracle to me, though, how she happened

I feel like I’m living the very early Genesis chapters

In which life and nature and goodness are what matters

Is it possible for Eve to revisit her decision?

Because now I have a clear vision

Of a reflection I want to be

When I see her face in the photos looking back at me

There’s a sweetness in that countenance already

Like her dad

But we’d both like to spare her the people-pleasing struggles we’ve had

Telling the truth

Acknowledging God is the beginning of insight

To know what He said

When the world speaks, I hope she listens to the ancient wisdom instead

That she hunts for the truth and that righteousness will be her delight

Because wisdom was there in the garden

Though she swims a little now, her life is just startin’

I want her eyes to see the stars

And I hope in the vast sea she swims around the serpent

I pray she marvels at the moon and Mars

Like all the greats, I hope she’s the Lord’s servant

I’m watching her bones and muscles form

And I’m conscious to feed her well

To bring her here, I’ll go through a storm

Time will surely tell

And I’ll read her the stories of Genesis

Tell her she’s not apart from the grand story, but rather in it

In a world gone amiss

All mamas and daughters are princesses

In all creation, to me, this child is gifted
