writings on life

Lil’ Virginia

She asked if she was pretty enough to be in a Nicholas Sparks movie

Or at least in a Loreal commercial

I told her she could do all of the above

She could jump any hurdle

With her kind of beauty

And she asked why she was named after a state

I told her I thought the state was named after her

I fluffed her feathers because I really believed she was great

She asked if I was sure

I told her to shoot for big things

To let love grow slow

To not be in a hurry

You’re tough enough to handle whatever life brings

Life is a flurry

And always know

You’re more than hair

You’re everything I love from where I’m from

The best state – Virginia

You’re like a strong flag in the breeze

A warning against tyranny

You’re breathtaking mountains, rolling hills, and dazzling coast

A standout bright red cardinal in bleak winter

You’re an engrossing conversation over a dark roast

You’re adventure, front and center

The object of my eye

Like in a romance movie, you’ve captivated the perfect guy

You’re strong like the colonial settlers

Trust your instincts but always question if you do know better

You’re an indelible stamp

And I’m waiting for you, holding down camp

(When she’s old enough

I’ll tell her all these things)
