We were driving to the Christmas Eve service
The evening ahead was sure to be a circus
Small talk with strangers or ones we see once a year
Do you ever wonder what we’re doing here?
We discussed the zombie apocalypse
It was the kindest thing I’d ever heard on his lips – that he would have me on his team
Along with an ER physician, a skilled soldier, a world-class chef, and a few others in between
It started to rain hard
The waters trapped my husband’s little sports car
In the downtown of the town we love
In the underpass, we got stuck
A man sleeping there awoke and asked us if we had any money
A few other trapped motorists were quite ugly
One guy started yelling
The waters rose
I kicked off my dress flats and climbed in my bare toes
Up the overpass
My husband followed and along the way we saw some rats
Traffic piled up as the rain came down
Out of the IHOP walked a person dressed like a clown
He held arrows in his hands
He started throwing them at me and my husband
Some other stranded motorists started cussing
One lady was screaming as her car was stuck in the water
She yelled, “My babies!”
A big burly guy tossed my husband a rope
He waded into the flood waters
Another guy said, “Here, take my knife”
The kids were stuck in the car, water was coming in
It was a matter of death and life
Arrows and rain were insulting
My husband cracked into the car with the knife then cut the kids lose
The waters were torrential
The girl in the car was so little
She was swept away by the river
The clown tried to get her
I took off running on the pavement and reached her first
Turns out a lady in scrubs was there to meet us – she was both an ER doctor and a nurse
She stuck a syringe in the clown
He went down
The homeless guy saw and cheered
For at that same time, his stolen money reappeared
Both kids were rescued from the river on that Christmas Eve night
Interestingly enough, everyone made it to the service in time
Cops and clowns, the soaked, the cloaked
The rescued, the rescuers, the redeemed, the revoked
I had a revelation last night as I sat in that pew
Life isn’t about me versus you
Even those that throw arrows and ask for loose change
Are simply trying to find a way
We’re all helpless babies trapped in flooded cars
The least among us is who we are
So we shared a feast – there was a chef
Everyone was dressed
In warm clothes
We shared heat and meat
And we laughed at our plight
The zombie apocalypse is every night
When you’re a human
A King was born
And He brought a storm
To every heart
In every life, He makes a mark
There is no us versus them
We are all human
All superstars
