Thanksgiving vs Spending

Thanksgiving can’t even have its time

The Black Friday ads rush in and sound like wind chimes

You need more things

Don’t you know that happiness is in buying?

A $100,000 Lexus or some minute crap from a craft store

Shoes! Vintage clothes, toys galore!

Or what about a mattress

A fake cactus?

Really, anything you can think of – just buy it!

Do you need it? Ah, don’t even deny it

Just buy, spend, buy!

Don’t think twice about what happens to all that stuff when you die

Or even when you’re alive

We’re got storage units for all the stuff

Just keep on buying because you can never have enough

I gotta get away from it

Because despite all the spending, happiness isn’t abundant

It’s as fleeting as all our stuff

As transient as us

And what about the planet?

Wouldn’t we all be better off if thanksgiving were rampant
