Norfolk

I love my home, in my home town

I reside two miles from the hospital I was born in

It’s being torn down

Sometimes I jog past it in the mornin’

One of life’s simple pleasures

My hometown is full of treasures

Some would say it’s lame but I love this place

Norfolk. Nor-fick.

Foreigners call it Nah-fick or Nor-folk

I don’t blame Sarah Palin for the word she spoke

Back in 2008

I was here back then too

This weekend I was supposed to run a race in Maryland

The race director canceled it

I was bummed, I won’t pretend

I drove four hours but at least I got to go on a walk with some friends

Along with 18,000 others we were supposed to run across the Bay Bridge

But I left that town early and drove home

I was so happy to see the green highway signs: Norfolk, Virginia Beach (the latter is the second best city in the world)

I went out for a run when I got home

6.2 miles – what was on tap all along

I ran over three bridges right here – Lafayette, Granby, Willow Wood

Over the water. Ah, it was so good!

I watched the cormorants

And the fall leaves along the water as they danced

Later me and my pup went to the shore – the Chesapeake Bay

In November, he dove right in

It was a beautiful day!

I watched the seagulls and pelicans

A white sailboat sat still on the horizon

Everything I want is right here, I’m findin’

This shore, this bay, these bridges and birds are my pick

Annapolis let me down

But just a little ways down the bay, waiting for me, like always

Was my beloved Norfolk
