Me and Fall

I love the fall

I imagine a lot of people do

It’s apple and cheese festivals

Pumpkins in church and home vestibules

There’s something melancholic about it

It makes me recall

Low dew points, low humidity

Feels good on my joints and helps me so much in running

The beach is magical, the water’s clear

It’s crisp but I can still put my feet in

I’ve spent my whole life here

The rows of sand ripples beneath my feet

Are like the rings of an old spiral notebook

I bend over, I open a closet – to take a look

2013, 2014 went by like a dream

A lot’s changed, but at the same time hasn’t, it seems

I yearn for Starbucks’s vanilla sweet cream cold brew

Pumpkin spice is overrated, what’s new?

My birthday’s in three weeks

I share it with my sister-in-law – what are the odds?

We’re getting old but she still looks forward to it all

And I’m growing out my bob

I finally found peace at my job

Maybe it’s because I’ve finally learned to let go

The grass is seldom greener on the other side

Progress is slow

Like the end of summer

I find I actually like it best when the yard is dried

Like in late September

The butterflies better enjoy this all before winter

My husband and I are going on a date later

We started dating in the fall of 2008, I remember

Back then it was chocolate chip pancakes and lifeguard stands

After all this time, he’s still my man

We’re both looking for a new vision

We’ve been immensely blessed

We’ve got all our provisions

What’s left when all the boxes are checked?

We’re late 30s and wonder what to expect

The mountains this time? A cruise?

I know at some point there will come bad news

The leaves are turning orangey-brown

And the sun is setting sooner

The water and air are getting chilly

Hope and love abound

Fall has a way of making me think of both the past and the future

Fall is when we got our beloved pup Billy

I love it when the cool air blows

And the orangey street lights glow

Soon the skeletons and the raccoons will appear

I’ll be among the foliage, or on the coast – with my husband and my dog

Coffee in hand, running shoes and hoodie on

Reveling in what I love most

When fall is here
