September Beach

Does your mind ever race

Is it always on the chase?

I like to think of a Scripture: whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable – anything that is excellent or praiseworthy

Doesn’t that paint a nicer picture than the news?

You know, today where I live, the sky was blue

I took my dog to the beach

I find that the green water, the jetties, the seahawks, the pelicans preach

I watched the sailboats

In mid-September it was still warm but some beachgoers wore coats

I paid attention to all the landmarks as we walked:

The 25th Bay sign

The seagulls that squawked

I tried to lose track of time

To forget about everything on the other side of the dunes

I listened to the circle of young girlfriends playing their Jack Johnson tunes

I overheard one talking about quilts

I had a twinge of guilt – as that’s something I never learned

I reapplied some sunscreen so I wouldn’t burn

The water was warm and felt good on my feet

The cool air off the water was such a relief

I watched as my pup floated

I took in the bay, the sand, the birds, nothing sugarcoated

And I thought about how the Lord is so devoted

Longer than the bay’s existed

His creation is terrific – like Him

So I just waded in it and it was splendid

Noble, praiseworthy

I found myself no longer in a hurry

And I thanked the Lord
