Doctor’s Office Prayer

I can’t remember how we got on the topic

On normal days I would have said to drop it

But it was a slower day and I actually had a few extra minutes of time

So I let the lady share what was on her mind

The inadequacy of Medicare

Then we switched to the president

You can imagine how that went

You would have thought we were friends at a coffee shop

But nah, we were in the exam room and I couldn’t get her to stop

From health care to the presidency to “the kingdom”

Some of my favorite topics but I knew I had to tread delicately

So I just listened

She asked me to envision: a world where Jesus reigns

And where the prophecies have been fulfilled

She sprinkled in some facts about her back pain

Maybe I appeared chilled

I’d been examining her spider veins

She asked me if I ever read the Bible

I’d played dumb up to that point

But I forced a smile

I used to be like her myself

Ironic enough she’s 30 years my senior

I stood there pondering what makes one a believer

Somewhere along the line my alacrity became demure

Of all the little details I’m not so sure

She went on about prophecy

And the presidency

There was a knock on the door

As she slid me her religious group’s card

We were both alarmed

As the president himself walked in

His entourage too

He told me and that woman, “I’m not really sure what to do”

With my stethoscope I listened to his heart

We all sat in that little room and prayed

It was a start
