Two Men

What was on his agenda that day as he walked out of the Hilton that morning

Someone knew

He set out in a blue, pressed, tailored suit

Evil lurked and came behind

What was in their minds?

Were both thinking about bank accounts

After a killing, the internet shouts

They were two men with two different smiles

What drove each

Some would say dollar signs, for the other guy maybe judgement time

What about all the people who see it on the evening news

Clear security footage causes the blues

A powerful man in a suit

Followed by a hooded man in hot pursuit

One said another was unworthy

The other said the same in return

There’s a plank in both eyes

I sit on the sofa trying to figure out what to do with mine

Aren’t all of our hearts black

The footage plays in my head

Bullets fired in a second hit like a heart attack

What is this force that dehumanizes

What’s driving us to put on disguises

I want out of the algorithm

To bridge the schism

All cry for justice

Is one life more prized than another

We need more than platitudes etched on a bumper

Every action is a ripple, a move in the system

One moves too fast – the police have missed him

While a wife and sons grieve

I ponder human nature’s mystery

No matter how you see it, it’s tragedy

Suits and hoods

Briefcases and backpacks

The eyes and hearts holding them are black

We’ve bitten into the apple and can’t go back

Evil plays on the TV

As the world grieves

There’s darkness in them both and in you and me

A Google calendar is empty

A man is forever on the run

How two lives were spent

Whatever was behind those two men

We are no different
