Behind the Railing

I asked him where that bird was going

Its legs outstretched

Black and white feathers glowing

In an amber sky the Lord had sketched

Behind the red painted railings of the cruise ship

He said the bird was just going for a flight like we were going for a stroll

Then he kissed my lips as day turned to night

We talked about our goals as we watched the sun slip over the horizon

He said we’re like that sun, slowly dyin’

Headed over the edge

The bird, the sunset, the ocean, love – all so memserizin’

Eleven years ago I gave him my pledge

And now on a cruise

Our union, something I can’t lose

So we stood behind the railing

The open water, the unplugging, has a way of unveiling

The ripples in the water are like seasons and friends and times gone by

He said, “Let’s celebrate each other before we die”

So we stretched out our arms and held each other

We watched that sea bird fly away

As we were sailing

Evening turned to gray

We hopped over the railing

Into the vast ocean, finally unencumbered
