Against the Tide

Swimming against the tide is tough

Trying to sift through the waves and fluff

I’m suffocating inside an in-box

And I can’t help but fix my eyes on clocks

Time doesn’t stand still

The high school kids are looking younger and younger

While I’m starting to think all adults are just waiting for a number

I don’t know who to vote for

Red-blue makes purple

Are we all on a ship that’s going under?

It’s a blur

I think we’re all singing the same song

All our lives, our choices are gongs

Making noise

I’m looking for the simple joys, the calm waters

Are there any?

Everyone’s words create a ripple

Every choice affects someone at least a little

Like the mailman and my dog being buddies today

Ironic, wouldn’t you say

The current is powerful

Sometimes the whole thing’s doubtful

But the fact I’m thinking about it

And love

Points to something

We’re all in the stream of history

Yeah, it’s a mystery

How can I die to come alive

To elevate my neighbor

To exalt a stranger

To respond with love

I need You
