My Mystery

You are a mystery

You have a unique ministry

I’m glad you’ve been here my whole life

Your quietness is not negligence

Your every word is like a wrench – in the best way

Your laughter means everything is okay

And the way you never complain

Your one serving of ice cream every night

The spoon full’s splash in coffee in the morning

Your eyes on me are my favorite sight

Your 74 years that you’ve never quit exploring

I’m nearly mute around you

But my affection’s true

You’re a surfing champion

A lifesaver

A poll-vaulting record holder

A torn shoulder

A kingdom gladiator

Rescuer of the abandoned dog

A rescue vehicle in the fog

I hope you live forever

Because I don’t know what I’ll do, what I’ll say – when our earthly bond is severed

You’re still an untold story – I’ve only heard bits

Around the dinner table, from others, quips

I won’t dig too deep

After the secrets you’re trying to keep

I’m truly glad to know you

Even if you remain a mystery
