Dog Beach

He said it so explicitly

“At 10 o’clock this becomes a people beach”

They rode red four-wheelers and they wore all black

It was like something out of Revelation

They were stern, uttered the law without hesitation

I nodded in assent

Climbed the dune with my pup then made the descent

Spectacular in a word

Sparkling blue water, warm sun, all different kinds of birds

I could sense fall on the horizon

The shimmering water was hypnotizing

I watched them drive away

Me and my Golden retriever headed to the waves

The water was clear

He swam without fear

Me too, till I nearly stepped on a skate’s tail

Jellyfish bobbed along too, without fail

I spotted a few people scattered on the shoreline

And then that atrocious sign: “No dogs allowed 10am-6pm”

No dogs on the beach?!!

That’s a sin

I kept an eye on my watch

We frolicked till 9:55

On the warm sand my pup sat his behind

I told him we had to leave

The cops were coming

You want to hear something?

I came into some money

Bought an island in the sea

I filled it full of doggies

A beautiful beach where they could be off leash

No patrolmen

No signs crossing out canines

Waves for swimming

Sand for digging

Retrievers, shepherds, terriers, hounds

Not a single pup missing

I ran the beach with them all, pure bliss

It was like something out of Genesis
