The Heat

The air is thick

Like my hair

The humidity sticks

The heat is like a blanket

It’s hard to take it

My skin oozes sweat to try to cool

My beloved Golden retriever drools

Even in the shade it feels like 104

What would someone move to Florida for

This is southern Virginia

Is global warming really an enigma

The AC makes me freeze

My pup says, “Can we go to the beach, please?”

So before the sun rises, before the sand is hot

On Saturday morning we head to our spot

I kick off my flip flops, peel off my top, unhook his leash

We sprint to the water to get some relief

Splash! In we go, like one of the sea birds

Breaking through the bay

That salt water brings our body temps down without delay

We float on our backs like little kids

We take what the Chesapeake gives

The salt, the coolness, the refreshment

The water is light

Like my body floating

Like my pup gloating

The bay is a glass of cold water

A marvel, a relief

In this brutal summer, my testament
