Lightning

Before bed last night I told you we’ve been married almost 11 years

Here we are now, no longer teens like when we met

It seems now we always talk about how Death nears

Some would say we’re still young, just in our 30s

But you and I both know that for some Death comes early

For how long can we skate around tragedy?

The last 11 years have been for me an ever after – happily

I told you that yesterday on our walk

When we looked at the water and the marsh, as we watched the crowned heron hunt

Remember when we used to hunt

Career, money, housing, food, friends, hobbies

Now we have everything we want

Are we at life’s crescendo

With you I have a wonderful peace

We talked last night of visiting Colorado

But deep down there is a little unease

That around the corner, in just a little bit

There will be a diagnosis or an accident

And last night I had a dream

That we drove over the bridge in Ocean View

There was a storm in the distance

We were riding in your old truck

How it was reminiscent

Of our youth

We drove into the storm

We were in the lightning – like nothing we’d ever seen

We were electrified

You kept on driving

It was terrifying but we were alive

And you and I rode together – to the other side
