A Thing Like That

How a storyteller can pull someone in

How characters and reality can blend

How a book can be unputdownable

How do you describe it

Like the majestic mountains after you’ve hiked them

Or describing to your best friend the man you’ve found yourself liking

How do you explain the feeling of falling in love

To me it wasn’t at all like falling into something

It was more like breathing or being in nature

And in some ways like walking on ice when you’re not sure

What’s underneath

Loving someone is kind-of like a leap

Faith that there’s something there

And choosing still to be loyal when the road turns out to be bare

And what about pushing the lactate threshold

That sense of victory, a quicker time – as a race unfolds

Work rewarded

Health afforded

A pretty day on the beach with friends

A dog’s commitment and pure joy given

Watching the end – a person on hospice

At work in my 20s, being the novice

With shoes too big to fill

Both labor and leisure kill

Seeing ships sail

And planes fly

So many people come and gone

Why does everything die

There’s rumor of another try

How do I describe anything

A thing like that

I’m happy to be alive

In fact, to try

To be living
