Congratulations

As an adult it’s still nice to get a pat on the back

So today I was happy to get just that

The email read Congrats!

It was a little note from Turbo Tax

Pixeled confetti and a link to a survey was enclosed

I had paid my taxes, what do you know

Accomplishments used to be marked by trophies and balloons

Cakes and roses

Now it’s heartaches and buffoons

I get excited about new sponges in the sink

And black coffee to drink

Minivans and wide shoes for my bunions

Carrot sticks instead of pop tarts and Funyuns

I go to work, pay my taxes and bills

Work out, clean the house

I sneak out to the beach, to a run, to anything but a screen

Among the mundane there are thrills

I hope in the end my efforts amount to the best congratulations

An open invitation – into the new city

A welcoming approval despite me

There’s really only One whose approval I need

I hope for it – flowers, balloons, confetti – for all the nations

Maybe some pop tarts too

An eternal celebration

When we’re all kids again

The utmost congratulations – for hearts made new
