Pick a Color

Pick a color

That’s what she told me when I walked into the nail studio

It’s what the professor said to the chemistry student in the front row

The hygienist said it to the kid in the chair at the orthodontist office

It’s worse than asking someone to make a wish

They say colors should fill the dinner dish

It’s got me held up in the produce aisle

At Home Depot it’s got me stalling for a while

Everything glitters

The oranges, golds, browns, yellows of fall

Sea blue, turquoise waters, or simply white on the walls

Green peppers come in yellow and orange and red as well

The wildflowers burst in pink and lavender

Oh, how they cast their spell

It’s harder than picking a number

I’d sooner win the lottery

Than pick which color to paint my nails

Or which color running shoes to buy

Or what shade of contacts to pick for my eyes

It’s worse than being lost in a land of fairy tails

Observing the rainbow is an odyssey

Puppy dog coats: golden, black, chocolate, cream

The sky’s pink, blue, purple is like a dream

My imagination is tantalized

Finally I decide

On a dull orange for my manicure

A golden retriever

A red hoodie

In all the decision fatigue

I sit down at night to a green salad

Look at the purple carrots, green tomatoes and red onions

All the colors are valid

Though some are shallow, some deep

I can’t pick another one

So finally I close my eyes

See black and go to sleep
