Half

I had my new lavender tank top on

No earbuds, no music, just the warm sunrise and birds

I jogged along to their songs I heard

The print on my shirt matched my black shorts

“Love and Sports”

I bared my shoulders for the first time this summer

Sweaty

I looked much tougher and fitter than the runner I want to be

But I got out there, said if I can run just two half mile repeats

At sub race pace

Maybe at 34 there’s a chance I can peak

The sidewalk in my neighborhood curves

I raced it like a track

Felt like I was flying

I didn’t look back

I imagined no one can catch me

Last rep and I was running at 6:40

My legs felt good, my heart burned a little

But I could taste victory at the next race

Half mile repeats are better than full

And 3.1 miles is better than 6.2

A half marathon better than 26.2

I finished three repeats, one more than I expected to

A tank top is better than short sleeves

When one’s running in the humidity

I finished my workout in half the time

I still had room in the day, energy in my legs

Thoughts to rhyme

Maybe half of everything is plenty
