Single

I know you’re longing

It’s in your talk and text

Even the way you walk

It drives everything

Like nothing’s right without a ring

You wallow as you watch everyone else marry

You think about how scary it is that it might never be you

My heart’s been broken as many times as I’ve watched yours break

How you’ve been used, how you’ve sold out, fallen short

All the names, pictures, and states

Swiping through apps, blowing through meetings like it’s a sport

It’s all shallow

How did you get into the pond

You know

You’re not too far gone

Between the tissues and tears

The therapists, the years

Remember what your dad said forever ago – when we were just kids:

“Do God’s business and on occasion stop and look up, see who’s around you”

Don’t forget this

The wisdom is still true

Come back

Dive deep

Relax

Be you

Water your spirit

Work the land

As people and time pass there’s no need to fear it

Look up and around

You might see a man

But even if you don’t

That’s okay

You’re okay
