writings on life

Mama

You know I don’t thank you enough

And I never did before

I was doing a writing exercise today in which I realized just that

You gave your life to me, your life for me

It’s a fact

Sorry I didn’t realize all this then

I was so caught up in my own world and in my friends’ opinions.

I was always so afraid you’d show up or say something to embarrass me. It was always best if you stayed behind.

But then again, I needed you to drive

At least until 16.

Then you let me borrow your car

Mama, you don’t know how wonderful you are.

You worked so I could go to school

You dressed me in nice clothes

You read to me

You took me on bike rides

And me and my brother to the beach and the pool

You took me to church and taught me how to behave

How to study, greet, and pray

You cooked dinner even when you were tired

And you were faithful to my father

And still are

Mama, you’re a star

Sometimes I look at myself and don’t know why you bothered

Fast forward in my 30s

You made my early years a fun journey

I want you to know before it’s too late

That I think you’re really great

You epitomize wisdom

Compassion and patience

You’re lovely and gracious

Thank you
