The City Workers

“BEEP BEEP BEEP”

A yellow tractor and a white city truck

There were four of them

On a Wednesday morning – somewhat random

I heard them yelling

Pulled up on the corner

The men were all black

They wore green vests

One man, James, was older and overweight – 300 pounds

But he said, “I’ll give it my best.”

The younger man, Bruce, was just 24 and thin

He said to himself, “Where do I begin?”

Kole and Cameron were in between – 40s

They pulled up to the job and said “What’s in this for me?”

They all looked at the job

Staring at the hole in the street

It had to be patched

Kole and Cameron said to James, “You go in the hole” and they laughed

Making gestures with their hands

Pointing and mocking

Bruce volunteered to go down into the hole

On the tractor was Kole

Cameron held the ropes

And James worked the truck to pour the cement

Kole had previously dug a pit

All the while plotting to get James to fall into it

For James had gotten a raise while he didn’t

The pit was beside James’ truck

When James opened the door

He saw ropes flinging about

Kole was in the tractor

When all of a sudden the ground collapsed – around the pit

The pit swallowed Kole

James grabbed a rope and threw it in

It connected on the other side to underground where Bruce was

He grabbed the rope too

Bruce and James made a swing so that Kole wouldn’t fall through

They saved his life from that sink hole

But then Cameron let his rope go

For he’d been mocked for so long too

Was it an accident – we don’t know

Be careful if you dig a pit

It may be the one you fall into
